Spring Break is right around the corner, and it is usually the perfect opportunity to head to the coast, the mountains, or some other family vacation spot to relax and celebrate a week away from school. Spring Break presents a unique opportunity for students to embrace a higher calling that prioritizes service over self. Rather than spending a week focused on relaxation and personal pursuits, students can participate in Serve and Learn Trips, dedicating their time and energy to helping others locally and internationally. These trips provide hands-on experiences that encourage personal growth, strengthen faith, and allow students to live out Christ’s command to love and serve others.
This blog post will explore how King’s High School students make a difference through Serve and Learn Trips while serving others, deepening relationships, and drawing closer to the Lord.
Transforming Lives Through Service
King’s Schools believes that authentic learning extends beyond the classroom. Serve and Learn Trips immerse students in environments where they can witness real-world challenges and actively contribute to solutions. Whether traveling internationally or serving locally in downtown Seattle, students gain a broader perspective on global and community needs. Most of the trips occur during spring break, with a few opportunities in the summer. Serve and Learn Trips over spring break range from one week to 10 days in length. King’s High School teachers lead the trip, along with parent volunteers. Typically, King’s partners with an organization abroad where students can serve.
Projects range from building or painting houses to playing games with younger students, picking up trash around the community, and volunteering at churches and camps. Students work in all of these environments with the understanding that sharing the Gospel and teaching people about the love of Jesus is the most important part. Serve and Learn Trips allow students to put their classroom curriculum and faith into practice in the real world.
Local and Global Mission Opportunities
Students can stay close to home and serve in downtown Seattle or travel the globe and serve in places like Nicaragua, Columbia, Jamaica, and Africa. These trips allow students to participate in outreach programs, support local ministries, and assist in community development projects. By stepping outside their comfort zones, they develop cultural awareness, leadership skills, and a deeper appreciation for their lives’ blessings. Students are also given many opportunities throughout the year to fundraise, help pay for their trip, and have time to bond and train as a team.
The Lasting Impact of Service
Choosing to serve over Spring Break is a life-changing decision. An interesting theme of students returning from these trips is often that they feel like their lives have changed more than they’re changing the lives of those they help and serve. Students return with a renewed sense of purpose, deeper faith, and stronger connections with those they serve alongside. One King’s Alumni shared, “Having the opportunity to go to a different culture showed me that no matter what you have, there is always room to be happy. I learned that the presence of God is everywhere. I went on my trip to Jamaica almost five years ago, and what I learned still impacts me today in college.” These experiences cultivate a servant-hearted mindset, instilling values that shape students into compassionate leaders who continue to make a difference long after their time at King’s Schools.
Join a Serve and Learn Trip This Spring Break
King’s Schools invites students to participate in this transformative experience. By dedicating time to serving others, students not only grow spiritually and emotionally but also gain invaluable life lessons that extend far beyond their school years. Whether traveling abroad or serving in Seattle, every act of kindness makes a difference.
Another King’s graduate has been living in Ukraine for many years and doing amazing things during the war. She first went on a spring break trip with Nick Sweeney. She recently raised funds and helped build a small block house for an elderly couple who lost their home. Amazing!!! And a great outcome from our Serve & Learn trips.
