Spanish Immersion FAQs

A research-based, proven method of educating children by immersing them in a second or 鈥渢arget鈥 language so they become proficient in Spanish. The Spanish Immersion Program is an option for students entering Kindergarten at King鈥檚 Elementary School. This program gives elementary students an opportunity to complete the curriculum in a nontraditional way – by immersing them in the Spanish language and culture starting in kindergarten; however, the goals of the program are best met when students stay with language immersion until they graduate from high school. Students become proficient in both Spanish and English, while learning the same curriculum content as their peers in the traditional English classrooms content and be contributing global citizens who are resilient disciples of Christ.

Immersion programs have existed in the United States for over 40 years, although the most dramatic growth in the number of programs has occurred over the past 15 years. Research indicates students achieve academically at or above than monolingual peers learning in English program within their school or district.

Families who value proficiency in a second language acquired during elementary school are encouraged to apply for the Spanish Immersion Program. This program is made possible through hard work, commitment, strong parental involvement, and the commitment of a dedicated staff.

The goals of the program are realized when students remain in the Spanish Immersion track until they graduate from high school. It is not in the best interest of students to be enrolled for only a one- or two-year experience.

We believe that every child deserves the right to be bilingual, gaining the benefits of proficiency in both Spanish and English. Through thoughtful instruction and intervention, we will work to provide each student with the support they need to be successful learners.

Parents need to understand that any delay is temporary and normal. Immersion students need steady exposure to English at home. Parents can help by reading to their children daily and involving them in games and activities that support their English learning before learning a second language. Additionally, parents of children with auditory problems, language delays or other challenges to learning should seriously consider the appropriateness of this program for their child. A consultation with our Academic Services Director, School Counselor and Principal may help clarify whether to enroll in this program.

Our purpose is for students to acquire Spanish language proficiency, achieve academic excellence, gain intercultural competence, and become contributing global citizens who are resilient disciples of Christ. Studies indicate that learning a second language at an early age has many benefits:

Students typically begin their English language arts curriculum in the second grade for 30-minutes a day. The teachers are native or near-native speakers of the target language. Students enter the immersion program in kindergarten.

There is no evidence to suggest this. A child doesn鈥檛 have to be exceptional to become bilingual. As long as the child is exposed to two languages throughout early childhood, he or she will acquire them both. Additional activities at home are not required for a child to successfully learn a second language.

Research consistently has demonstrated that the immersion experience enhances English language development. It should be noted that in full immersion students鈥 English development may lag temporarily in reading, word knowledge, and spelling while instruction is occurring exclusively in Spanish. However, it is important for parents to understand that this lag is temporary and to be expected.

Immersion students, like all King鈥檚 students, need consistent exposure to, and support of, English at home. Parents need to provide their children with experiences that will enhance their English language and literacy development. We encourage all parents at King鈥檚 to read to their children 20 minutes every day and involve them in games and activities that compliment English learning. Research shows that the stronger the development of the native language, the greater the proficiency in the immersion language, so children who enter an immersion program with a strong base in English will succeed more easily than those whose English skills are not as strong.

Students in Spanish Immersion classrooms will meet grade level standards as students in the monolingual classes. They will also attend the same specialists鈥 classes (with the exception of Spanish) and will be taught in English.

The Spanish and English students will also interact together through worship, extended learning trips, assemblies, lunch, recesses, some specialists and engage in cross language teaching and sharing.

As we support our students, we continue to honor Spanish as the minority language in our immersion program. While our goal is full immersion in Spanish, teachers may use English at their discretion when necessary to support a student.

Starting in the second semester of second grade, English is studied for about 30 minutes a day. As students progress through school, the time spent studying English gradually increases with each grade level. Report cards, notices and newsletters are issued in English.

A long-term commitment is essential for children to experience the great benefits an immersion education yield.

Students succeed best in immersion programs when parents are actively involved. Teachers and coordinators will help by providing Spanish resources for learning at home, even if Spanish isn’t spoken there.

Parents can support their child in these ways:

  • Make a long-term commitment to the program
  • Develop an understanding of immersion education.
  • Provide experiences outside of school to develop English language skills.
  • Encourage the use of the second language outside of school.
  • Most importantly, be sure your child attends school every day.
  • Volunteer at school and in your child鈥檚 classroom.

Yes, a bilingual student can enroll in an early total one-way immersion program and acquire a third language; however, strong parental involvement and commitment are essential to effectively support the student鈥檚 needs.

This decision should be carefully considered to ensure it aligns with the student鈥檚 goals and language development. Please contact and schedule a meeting with the Spanish Immersion Director for further guidance.
